Mid-Century Freestanding Wall Unit by Torbjørn Afdal & Rolf Hesland
Mid-century seldom seen freestanding wall unit, made in Norway circa 1950s. Designed by Torbjørn Afdal & Rolf Hesland for Bruksbo Tyristrand. What an absolute unit, it doesn’t get more perfect in our book. The Norwegian design sentiment is practical and prioritizes minimalism, yet almost looks like a sculpture. It is furniture, but goes a step beyond into pure art.
This teak wall unit features two bays sitting atop tall tapered rail systems. The legs make a n-shape to holster the cases and allow the piece to stand unattached or float if desired The backs of the legs are cut so they do not interfere with moulding and the piece can rest flush against the wall.
Two large cases align the bottoms. The left-hand case has two cabinet doors with carved sleek recessed handles, opening to two internal shelves. The right-hand cabinet has a bank of three drawers with the same recessed handles. Gorgeous teak grain along the top and front of each case.
Above the cases, are five shelves that can be adjusted to preference due to peg holes along the rail systems. Each shelf has brass hardware that holds the shelfs into a sturdy position using leverage. This is the first wall unit we have acquired with this type of hardware which is a lovely pop against the teak and creates such a cool look. Overall, this piece is in great vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use.
Dimensions:
70” W x 16” D x 82.5” H
