PHILIP TRUANT
Artist Philip Truant is a sculptor based on Chapel Hill, NC. He graduated from Alfred University in 2015 with a BFA in sculpture. His main medium is steel, but he enjoys working with a variety of media. His abstract steel sculptures engage with positive and negative spaces, often reflecting the aesthetics of his drawings. Truant is interested in the interplay of light and shadow, and taking the hard, sharp medium of steel and manipulating it to create softness and movement. His inspirations include architecture, construction machinery, and building materials. His process starts with drawing abstract forms on paper, then transferring those drawings to what he calls 3D drawings — making them into a cardboard maquette, then into the final steel sculpture.
