In this piece, Byrd takes a brutalist approach by keeping the overall shape of the stone and natural texture. It is beautifully contrasted with smooth sections showcasing a dark gray almost black color. Byrd creates focal points within the dark sections by carving circles and oval shapes with texture and dimension. We love this period of Byrd’s work as it explores the natural feeling of stone and showcases the different ways of which stone can be manipulated. Wonderful from every angle.
